Ben Brown: Dear internet,

Couple of things. First, why is Tumblr so anti-social? I wanted to respond to this post, but the only way I can do it is by reblogging. Poop on that. But the more important thing — this is so right on it hurts. Thanks to Doug and Ben for it. And as a sidenote, after reading Ben’s post I went on to peek at the XOXOCO’s website, and said aloud “I like this guy.” My girlfriend was curious. I showed her the rainbow text, and we both nodded approvingly. Hit the back button, and she was like “oh, it’s Ben Brown? I know him. Über? He’s internet famous.” And she’s not even in “this industry.” Just a cool smarty.

So, yeah, thanks fellas.

And this has got me thinking that, though I’ve got 17 years of experience in this industry, maybe I’m not actually in this industry. Maybe I’m just a hobbyist. A poseur.

I shrugged. Katie, as usual, is right: I am a genius and a visionary the likes of which the world has only rarely ever seen. Time and money and 20 year old computer programmers with 6 figure salaries are illusions that distract us from the only thing that really matters, the central organizing principal behind all of reality: coffee.
And pixel art.

I want you to go read this. Like Ben, I think many modern online creators are finding they’re in an industry that has a valuation that’s difficult to measure, but thankfully also has no direct competition: making interesting things for yourself, and for others.

There will always be 18-20 year olds for fluffy press stories looking to pretend that everyone is creating the next big thing. These stories are sensational, at best, and almost always horse shit. However, there will also always be far more people to make smile and delight with one’s work, and that’s what Ben does. And what I will keep attempting to do. An industry with no upper limit on value, joy, or good will.
